As a river flowing to the south to Pyeongchang-gun and Yeongwol-gun of Gangwon-do into the Namhangang River, the Pyeongchang River is 220 km long.

Originating from the south of Odaesan Mountain in the northern part of Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, the water flows southwest to Soksacheon Stream, then merges with Heungjeongcheon Stream at Bongpyeong-myeon to form the Pyeongchanggang River.

Merging Daehwacheon Stream and Gyechoncheon Stream, it flows south via Pyeongchang-eup to Jucheongang River in Hanbando-myeon and then flows east.

It flows from the western part of Yeongwol-eup under the name of the Seogang River and then merges with the Donggang River to the Namhangang River. The lineal distance is just 60 km but the main channel length is 220 km and this means that the river is heavily winding.
