It was designated as the 11th national park in 1975 and it covers an area of 326.348 ㎢.

It has five peaks lined up like a folding screen, including the highest peak Birobong Peak at 1,563 m under the sea level, Dongdaesan (1,434 m), Durobong (1,422 m), Sangwangbong (1,491 m) and Horyeongbong (1,561 m). Under Noinbong (1,338 m) separate to the east from them, there is Sogeumgang River with a magnificent view. In addition, Gyebangsan Mountain (1,577 m) with a beautiful snowy landscape is located to the east.

Odaesan National Park is a sacred place for Manjusri, a historical place, as the Odaesan History Archives where Annals of the Joseon Dynasty were kept and also the center of Baekdudaegan with high ecological value.

There are many national treasures and treasure-class cultural relics including the Octagonal Nine-story Stone Pagoda of Woljeongsa Temple and the Bronze Bell of Sangwonsa.
